I bought a couple of these boxes to make guitars for my in-laws. These boxes are awesome! I’ll offer a few thoughts here.
1. I bought the unfinished version because I wanted a totally “blank canvas” to paint and finish to my own desire. These boxes work really well with the Apple Barrel craft paints that I like to use. I then used some wipe on poly acrylic to give them a nice finish. I didn’t even need to do any sanding. They were ready to paint right out of the package.
2. The sound hole is the perfect size for MGB’s newest line of sound hole covers.
3. These boxes are sturdy. The construction is solid.
4. The acoustics are to die for. Just tap on the box right out of the package and you can tell that you’re going to get a beautiful sounding guitar or ukulele.
5. Bolt on necks are the best way to go here. It’s pretty easy to find the center of the top side of the box, mark your spot, and drill your hole. I highly recommend that you get a deep well socket for this operation, though. The sound hole is on the small side and the bracing right above it makes getting a wrench on the nut difficult, so you’ll need a socket.
6. I’ve not yet tried to do any electronics with one of these boxes. I’ve heard that it can be a little difficult to work the wiring inside, especially if you have large hands.
7. Get one of these boxes. You won’t regret it.
