Potentiometer Hole Locator

This handy template allows the builder to accurately mark the locations for potentiometers. Align the template with the lower left corner of the box. Then mark the holes through the template with an awl. Drill the holes using a 5/16s drill. Brad point drill bits work well. Note we also mark our bits with colored tape to help find them quickly.
Flat Pup Cover Spacer/Shim

It is always best to keep the pickups as close as possible to the face of the pickup. Occasionally the the geometry of the box, neck and bridge creates a larger distance. If possible it would be helpful to lift the pickup and cover. These spacers are made for each of the MGB flat pups. The are 1/8 of an inch thick. You can use one or more. The screws that come with the covers are long enough to handle several spacers.
Flat Pup Template

This template allows the builder to accurately locate any of the MGB Flat Pups and mark the necessary holes for mounting the cover.
it easy to use, simply:
I identify and mark the centerline of the box.
Select the appropriate pickup on the template.
Mark the mounting holes and the wire hole for the pickup.
Drill a one inch hole when using a RSG pickup where the pickup is already soldered to a harness.
Install the pickup/cover.
The template provides the name and part number of all MGB Flat Pups and the cover options.

This kit includes everything needed to build a Mandolin except for the body. The neck is Okume with a Walnut fretboard. Binding and face and side fret markers are included. The scale length is 13 3/4 inches. The neck also includes a truss rod. A compensated and adjustable Walnut bridge is included along with a chrome tailpiece. Tuners and a truss rod cover are included. Four pairs of stings are provided including .012, .016, .026 and .032 sizes. Tuning is GDAE.
Note: Keep in mind the tension created by 8 strings is substantial, all boxes will need additional reinforcement to handle the added stress. Make sure the top where the neck is connected is thick (close to 3/8" is ideal) and rigid. You will note that two hanger bolts are used to provide and solid connection between the neck and the box.

MGB is pleased to provide 3 string packs. These made in the US strings are available in several popular assortments.
MGB strings are available in two styles, Plain Steel and Nickel Wound. Plain Steel strings are thinner and used in the lower positions on a instrument and create higher pitches. Nickel Wound strings are much thicker and heavier and used on the higher positions on an instrument and create lower pitches. Using a combination of different styles and diameters tuned to different pitches is the goal.
The scale length of the neck is also critical a factor in selecting the correct strings. Scales lengths from 24-25.5 inches are the standard for guitars. We generally make recommendations for scale lengths in that range. If the scale length is longer or shorter, other strings may work better.
Picking the right strings are a personal choice. At MGB we tend to prefer lighter strings like .013, .017 and .026 tuned to GDG.
We offer an assortment of sizes in both styles. We also offer different quantities, you can buy one, three or a dozen strings. We believe our offering provides lots of options for builders. You can pick your favorite strings or do some experimentation with different strings.
MGB's CBG cheat sheet is a valuable tool for better understanding the different pitches we are referring to and can be found HERE.

In some builds it is preferred to place the pickup under the lid of the box, this practice is often referred to as "ghosting". Many builders have had good success using the MGB Mini Box Buckers for these applications. MGB is proud to introduce our new Lucky 13 flat pup designed for ghosting.
By adding more wire and strengthening the magnetic field we have a solid solution. These new pickups measure 13k ohms plus. We have found in testing that the pickups work well when the distance from the pickup to the strings is .5". Make sure the magnets face the strings.
Measuring 2.56" by 1.6" and .3" thick, these pickups can be used on 3,4 and 6 string builds. Works with our 6 string Boxbucker covers.

The Hot Tuna with its crazy name is pretty straightforward mini humbucker. It's small in scale and works out perfect for a lot of cigar box guitars. This humbucker has split coil wiring and is a little bit different than some of the wirings you'll see on some of our other pickups. Make sure to watch our video on that above.
