From Bill:

According to Walter Boyce, "my father [Willis] made it and he used to play it. He played the violin and he studied violin and he used to play all kinds of music. He did play for square dances on Saturday nights and he took it down there as a novelty a few times, and played it there. I guess some people saw it and asked him to play it other places."
